Reimagining Conservation: Decolonising the Process
Panellists representing South East Asia, New Zealand, and Africa will engage in a discussion on how zoos and conservation organisations work alongside Traditional Owners, reflecting on past experiences and reimagining what this collaboration will look like in 2050.
Session - Session - Institute Lecture Theatre
Elaine will give an overview of Wild Africa, a new habitat development within Monarto Safari Park, South Australia. This development is taking the concept of open range to another level. At 560 hectares in size (1400 acres) it is a very big area that has largely been built in house. There are 45 kilometres of fencing, 24 kilometres of safari tracks, over 100,000 trees have been planted, 8 waterholes created and it will house about 500 animals across 14 species.

Her presentation will cover the development process as well as animal management considerations when managing species in such a large area. Elaine will also tempt you with a future visit as she gives an overview of the visitor accommodation and tour experiences that will be offered. She will also touch on the financial model that supports this development and how this will enable an increased conservation commitment.

Partners Report - Reverse the Red

Session - Session - Institute Lecture Theatre
We'll talk about how the Reverse the Red Coalition is shaping global conservation for species and how each WAZA member can be a part of this incredible effort.
Protecting the places, animals, people we love needs our interconnection with the natural world to be at the heart of how we live, learn, work and play. The shifts we need to policy and practice to achieve this are bold, but achievable. Such shifts need the public’s understanding and support to happen. Zoos and Aquariums, as highly trusted organisations, play a critical role in building this understanding and support. Yet, our information environment, and people’s own cognitive processing systems, create many barriers to this understanding and support. Drawing on insights from the cognitive and social sciences, as well as examples from work we have done on the climate and environment, I will cover the basics of framing (the strategic decisions we make on how to present an issue) as a tool anyone can and should use. I will provide practical advice on ways those working in the field and your allies can communicate to deepen the public’s understanding of complex issues and unlock demand for the solutions we need.
