Zoonotic diseases: Threats to both animals and humans

It took a global pandemic for the majority of the world to sit up and take notice about the threat of zoonotic diseases spilling over from wild populations, but of course zoos have been aware of this danger for years. This session will explore trends in spillover events, what's driving them, and -- crucially -- how we can all reduce risk.

WAZA 2030 Conservation Goal

Session - Session - Institute Lecture Theatre
Seizing the Opportunity: Driving Collective Impact through WAZA’s 2030 Conservation Goal

What role does the global zoo and aquarium community play in conservation? How are we supporting international conservation frameworks established by treaties and organisations such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and the IUCN? As the world confronts a new extinction crisis, how can we amplify our contributions on a global scale and take greater responsibility in conserving biodiversity? How can we effectively measure our community’s current efforts and scale them up? How can we demonstrate the tangible impact of our work in reversing species decline? And how can we position ourselves as trusted leaders in advancing conservation, in line with WAZA’s vision?

WAZA is currently exploring the WAZA 2030 Conservation Goal—an ambitious initiative designed to address these pressing questions. This session will delve into the opportunities presented by this goal and emphasise the importance of WAZA members focusing our efforts on its development and implementation in the coming years.
